It’s really disheartening to see the condition of the world this year. Our recession here in the states, Japan’s tragedy which feels like it was years ago but only happened a few months back and now this drought and famine disaster in Somalia. It’s bad enough that these parts of Africa are already war-torn, that the people are lucky if they aren’t being shot at or tormented by local warring groups. But then to be faced with the desolation of your land and to watch your children die from lack of food and water has to be completely demoralizing. We share this planet, we’re one people under God, we gotta look out for one another. Help us help Somalia, buy a shirt or just donate to CARE.org or any number of charities currently making efforts to make things better. A few dollars will go a long way to helping.
Personally, I’ve just become a father. To look at my son and imagine him withering away, too weak to brush off the flies and the look of helplessness in his eyes, I’d kill myself and feed him me if it were possible. The pain that these people have to go through is nothing I want to experience, it’s nothing I want to ever be able to think about as a memory in my head. But I can relate to it, I can empathize. I know a lot of you can as well, those of you who love your mother’s and father’s, those of you who are mother’s and father’s. We live gifted regardless of our intelligence or social standing, regardless of our bank accounts or lack thereof. We are gifted because each day doesn’t bring with it the imminent danger of death by roving gangs or slow cruel starvation at the hands of the the weather. We have computers and phones, like the ones you are reading this posting on. We have the ability to live off the system or feed it. We have many choices where so many have next to none. So that’s why I ask you to help, if you can. Spread the word, give, anything.
